Mr Super Hunky - Chopin/ Super-Hunky Opus 28 no. 20 (sort of!) 28: Message Board
Mr Super Hunky's Comments
Let's face it, nobody is expecting any kind of normal rendition of this piece from me as I butcher everything I get my hands on. This is no exception.I am performing this piece totally by ear as I don't have any sheet music for it and probably wouldn't use it anyway since I hate to read music.
Many, if not most of the chords I am using are not "exactly" correct as I am making them all up. Still, this piece may sound somewhat familiar other than the improvised sections which many have come to love......or make them puke!
To be honest, I have put a lot of time and effort into this performance as I've got some self-imposed wacky image to uphold. Even though I did have a lot of fun learning this piece, I do deeply respect and enjoy the works of Chopin and for this reason I did not want to make my performance or turn this recital into a sideshow act. Therefore, I will perform to the best of my current abilities this wonderful piece........(along with some swanky spices of course!)
I hope you like it.

Kathleen (loveschopintoomcuh) | 2010-10-31 19:50:34 | Mr. SH: I just adored your rendition of Chopin's prelude. I just KNEW you could do it and so beautifully too! I detected just a bit of Manilow in your "creative" version, but I am a big Manilow fan (wouldn't you know) and was awed by it also. You are a superb pianist. |
Andy Platt | 2010-10-20 20:46:09 | Could it be magic? Yes! Now, I will have to dig out the "real" Chopin prelude but I enjoyed this take on it immensely. |
salzdt | 2010-10-20 10:14:43 | I really enjoyed you improvasation of this Chopin Prelude. When you stick to his original score, you always think there must be more. Well you did it, great job, and your piano sound super. Dot |
timmyab | 2010-10-20 09:54:15 | Very enjoyable.Love the chords you've chosen and the dark transisional passages. I'd never heard the similarity between the two pieces before but from now on I'll always be aware of it. |
heidiv | 2010-10-19 21:10:58 | It's obvious that you put a lot of time and effort into this performance and you're a very talented player! improv is a skill that more of us should acquire. Well done! |
ab-ster | 2010-10-19 20:58:23 | What can I say, this was SUPER-splendid job. I love the chord progression of this 'piece' and your playing style. It does sound like you've put a lot of hours practicing this, it is very good. And your piano sounds very rich and powerful. |
gerg | 2010-10-18 12:00:48 | That was interesting - and pretty cool to be honest! What improv talent you have! This piece lends itself particularly well to improve, doesn't it? Very nicely done, and thank you so much! :) |
Inlanding | 2010-10-18 11:18:50 | Lots of fun to listen to. Nice, poetic variation. Thanks! |
LisztAddict | 2010-10-18 09:08:50 | I knew you could do this. Congratulations on your first Chopin & variations! :) |
Strings & Wood | 2010-10-18 09:03:52 | MSH, I have 28/20 on my to do list and I must say you handled those powerful cords very well. Good job on the improvisation and I was hoping you would come back to the original score at the end! |
Chardonnay | 2010-10-18 06:25:19 | Mr. SH, this was really beautiful and your piano sounds gorgeous! i totally enjoyed what you did with this prelude, and you should give yourself more credit. It's amazing to be able to do this totally by ear, definitely something I couldn't do- I'll bet that Chopin is beaming with pride right now! |
Elene | 2010-10-18 04:22:59 | I was so wondering what to expect of this performance! It came off quite well. You know, I learned 28/20 early in my piano "career," but I don't think I could ever have gotten this close to it by ear. Spookily enough, my daughter and I heard a French cover of "Could It Be Magic" last night while eating in a creperie near our hotel. That was the first time I'd heard it in years, and here it is again! When you have a great chord progression, you can just keep spinning it out into new ideas. Perhaps 28/20 should become like La Folia and composers and improvisers should continue to build upon it. I did recently hear a large, involved set of variations based on this prelude, but I can't remember the name of the composer. I will play around with it when I get home and back to a piano (sob sob)! |

CMohr | 2010-10-18 00:29:10 | Wow! What a great "re-working" of this prelude! I was looking forward to this and thoroughly enjoyed your performance. It's always exciting to hear a completely new take on a well known piece. I wish I could hear what goes on in your head! |
Mistaya | 2010-10-17 23:48:07 | So, I had to pull out the music ... you have amazing improvisational skills which I envy. It was fun to see where you went with the theme and I enjoyed the journey very much (except for one chord which drove me nuts). I'm glad you participated - improvisation was a skill valued in Chopin's time as well. Impressive performance. |
AnotherSchmoe | 2010-10-17 13:39:21 | Mr. SH, let me be the first that I am thoroughly impressed! Beautiful performance. I'm hearing another song in there somewhere but I can't quite place the lyrics or remember the name of it, but I like it a lot. Great performance, very interesting but really nice too. I'm still amazed at how you can do all of this by ear and noodling around, the most I can do by ear is 'Mary Had a Little Lamb' and that's with single notes and no chords. =P Great job and thanks for sharing, I was not disappointed! |
