dannylux - Bowen Serious Dance 51/2: Message Board
dannylux's Comments
When I first heard York Bowen's Serious Dance on Stephen Hough's English Album, I knew I had to learn it. Fortunately, the Eastman School of Music's Sibley Library had already scanned and posted the score on their site. It's a good piece to learn to play chords softly.
Post your comments on dannylux's performance!

Mel / dannylux | 2011-08-24 14:04:56 | Thanks very much for your kind words. If you like this piece, I can highly recommend Bowen's Reverie D'Amour, Op.20 No.2. PM me for the score, or post here. From Stephen Hough's liner notes: "Reverie d'Amour is an early piece whose blushingly lush lyricism hovers delightfully close to decadence." Cinnamonbear, the three Serious Dances were composed in 1919. |

Julian (SlatterFan) | 2011-08-21 05:58:07 | Lovely piece! I love the way the music seems to flow in and out of a literal dance, a slow waltz that might have been danced in elegant ballrooms of 1920s or 1930s England, and a wistful ballad in dance rhythm. Beautifully played. By the way, the phrase that appears just after the opening Brahmsian notes (the same pattern that begins Op. 119 No. 1) seems very familiar but I can't place it. Either Bowen borrowed from a popular song, or a songwriter borrowed from Bowen's piece? |
