I had the privilege of getting to know Noam Elkies a number of years ago, over many evenings at the piano. In addition to being a mathematical bright star (Noam holds Harvard's record for the youngest tenure, which he was awarded at age 26), he is a true musical genius. I don't use the term casually. I've spent wondrous hours listening to him play all kinds of things: three voices of a Bach fugue while he sings the fourth, effortless impromptu transcriptions of symphonies, and his own shining, twisty, beautiful compositions.

I'll let his work speak for itself. Here is a piece called Elegie that he wrote, believe it or not, at the age of six.

justarobert	2011-08-20 20:45:38	Quite lovely. I am not too surprised that Noam Elkies was capable of this at such a young age, given his other exceptional talents (youngest full professor at Harvard, Ph.D. at 20, etc.).

The respect you have for the person who composed it, and the wonder you must feel at it being composed at such a young age, comes through in your interpretation. I get the impression that you are handling a delicate and fragile artifact as you consider your phrasings and their twists and turns. Very beautiful, Jason!

It seems mature and sophisticated the way the piece gently touches on so many different styles throughout the Classical and Romantic eras, with a very improvised feel but without losing cohesion. Wow! (Nice playing too, obviously. I'm sure you won't be offended that the composition is the main thing that dazzles here!)
