Charles-Valentin Alkan (1813-1888) has a lop-sided reputation today for ferociously virtuoso works, sometimes written on a massive scale. But he also wrote a great many smaller works that are not knuckle-busters. "The First Love Letter", from his "48 Esquisses", is one of them. As is often true with Alkan, the piece may be at least slightly ironic. In any case, it is a tiny marvel of tone-painting, right down to the staccato chords marking the letter's close and signature.Post your comments on wr's performance!
