Tim Adrianson - Harris American Ballads: Message Board
Tim Adrianson's Comments
In the 1930's and '40's, Roy Harris was regarded as one of the "kingpin" American composers. Unfortunately, his "star" precipitously declined, even during his lifetime. Personally, I find his arrangements of five American folksongs, written in 1946, very inventive and charming, and typical of his style. They are:\1 The Streets of Laredo
2 Wayfaring Stranger (although not the melody that I know)
3 The Bird
4 Black is the Color of My True Love's Hair (NOT a folk-song, incidentally, but rather composed by John Jacob Niles)
5 Cod Liver Ile
