Tim Adrianson - Fine Variations, from Music for Piano: Message Board

Tim Adrianson's Comments

Irvine Fine was a well-known and respected composer and teacher in the New England area (Brandeis Univ) until his untimely death at age 48 of a heart attack in 1962. His music was both resolutely NeoClassical and very lyrical in his early years, but like many other American composers, he felt the need to develop a harsher, chromatic, almost atonal sound in the '50's and early '60's. The Variations are from a suite of pieces he wrote in 1947, simply entitled "Music for Piano". The entire suite is very charming, but the Variations "movement" is for me quite specially beautiful and touching.
