Tim Adrianson - Kubik Sonatina for Piano: Message Board

Tim Adrianson's Comments

Gail Kubik was a composer best known in the '40's and '50's, although even then he was pretty much "under the radar", given his considerable talent (IMO). Like many other American composers of that time, he was heavily influenced by the polytonal, spare, angular, jazzy American "sound" that Aaron Copland was so instrumental in developing. This Sonatina is an early effort (1941) dedicated to his teacher at the time, Walter Piston; but it fully reflects his mature style.
