currawong - Sutherland Sonatina movt 2: Message Board

currawong's Comments

Australian comppser Margaret Sutherland (1897-1984) was born in Adelaide, studied in Melbourne, Vienna and London (Arnold Bax was one of her mentors). Her music includes works for piano, voice (I've played quite a few of the songs), orchestra, and a large body of chamber music. I've always had the impression that she was regarded as too modern in the 30s-50s, and not modern enough in the 60s and 70s. Whilst certainly not unknown in Australia, she probably hasn't had as much recognition as her music deserves, and so earns the title of unsung hero.
This sonatina dates from 1956, and the composer described it as a series of conversations, inspired by chamber music.
