SlatterFan - Ireland Meridian: Message Board
SlatterFan's Comments
John Ireland (1879-1962) was an English composer who spent most of his life in London. He also taught composition at the Royal College of Music and his pupils included Benjamin Britten. His compositions for solo piano are all late romantic and accessible in style, and are published by Stainer & Bell in five volumes.Meridian, along with Daydream, was written in the composer's youth and was polished many years later in 1941. It is set in London, with the chimes of Big Ben heard both up close and finally faintly in the distance. I also sense the gentle flow of the Thames in the barcarolle-like rhythm, and some light rain after the first climax.
