SlatterFan - Ireland Summer Evening: Message Board

SlatterFan's Comments

John Ireland (1879-1962) was an English composer who spent most of his life in London. He also taught composition at the Royal College of Music and his pupils included Benjamin Britten. His compositions for solo piano are all late romantic and accessible in style, and are published by Stainer & Bell in five volumes.

Summer Evening was written in 1919. It is full of the composer's characteristic harmonic progressions and is quite recognisable as Ireland to listeners who know some of his other works. It shows some French influence, especially a climax that is reminiscent of a similar climax in the first movement of Ravel's Sonatine.
